Fyodor Dostoevsky was born on November
11, 1821, in Moscow, Russia. In 1843, upon
graduating from the Military Engineering
Academy in Saint Petersburg, he decided
on a career as a writer. Thus, in 1846, he
published his first book — Poor People. Ho-
wever, for defending the socialist revolution,
he was sentenced to four years of hard labor
in Siberia.
The writer, who died on February 9, 1881,
in Saint Petersburg, was one of the main
representatives of Russian realism and author
of the novel Crime and Punishment. His works
are brmarked by psychological analysis and
the absence of idealizations. There are
recurring themes such as murder, suicide,
humiliation, freedom and religion.
